Ingrediente Domino

The first concert is behind us. The cathedral was packed full and the programme was very warmly received. Part One was a sequence of music for Holy Week, beginning with George Malcolm's setting of Ingrediente Domino, sung on Palm Sunday as the choir enters the Cathedral. Its trumpet-like opening statement, for trebles and altos alone, perfectly showcases the so-called continental tone which was developed by Malcolm in the 1950s and is still a distinguishing feature of the boys' sound. The audience was asked not to applaud until the interval to avoid interrupting the narrative. After a short break there followed some Spanish renaissance polyphony - Guerrero and Victoria - before an organ solo, some Mawby and finally Elgar's Great is the Lord. It was a really excellent opening concert - very well done to everyone!
Mr McLaughlan managed to snap this photo during the applause. I wonder if I should encourage the younger members of the choir to smile a bit more in the next concert...

  1. Congratulations to everyone!!! Sounds like the 1st concert was a total success. Am sure that the remaing 7 will be just as fantastic! We are very excited to be able to see the Choir perform tomorrow in Philadelphia. Look forward to meeting up with the other parents on Friday!
All the best from the Garcia-Peguinho's

  2. It could well be that they were not smiling because they were exhausted after the concert and still jet lagged?!? Hope the trip to Philadelphia goes well. All best wishes Jeremy & Catherine de Satgé

  3. I'm sure that was the case, but how we behave on stage is as much part of the performance as the music itself. We'll focus on improving that before the next concert. MB
